About us
The Barn at Merrydell gets its name from a combination of the owners’ names.
In 2014, Dale and Mary purchased the property where the barn stands today. Mary became “Merry” and Dale became “Dell.” When the two names are combined, they create the name Merrydell.
The current barn is a renovation of an older structure that was already on the property. The original barn is believed to have been built in the early 1900s. It sits in the small community of Traphill in Wilkes County, North Carolina.
Many years ago, Traphill was known as the “Moonshine Capital of the World.” During that time, the barn was used to store bags of sugar, which was an important ingredient in making moonshine. The barn served this purpose for a local bootlegger.

Restoring the Barn’s Legacy
In 2017, a powerful windstorm nearly destroyed the barn. The upstairs was badly damaged, and the structure was almost blown off its foundation.
After the storm, we decided to restore the barn and bring it back to life. Work began soon after, and within about six months the barn was rebuilt into what it is today.
Not long after finishing the renovation, we realized the space would make a wonderful vacation rental where others could come and enjoy the beauty and quiet of the area.
The rest is history.
